7 tips for the volunteer running church presentation

Running the screens is one of the most visible — and most stressful — volunteer jobs in church. One wrong slide and everyone notices. The good news: most on-screen mistakes come from a handful of avoidable causes. Build these seven habits and your Sundays get a lot calmer.

1. Arrive early and do a real run-through

Turn everything on well before the service and test it the way it'll actually be used — real mics, real levels, the actual songs and passages. Ten quiet minutes now saves a scramble later.

2. Get a clean audio feed

3. Learn your shortcuts

Knowing the keys to go next, previous, blank the screen, and clear an overlay — without hunting with the mouse — is the difference between smooth and frantic. The blank/black screen shortcut is the most important one you'll ever learn: when in doubt, clear the screen.

4. Have a backup plan

• Know how to black the output instantly if something looks wrong.
• Keep a printed order of service so you're not lost if a screen freezes.
• Know who to signal if you need a moment.

5. Match the look to the room

Readable beats fancy. Use large, high-contrast text, keep lower-thirds clear of faces and captions, and match your theme colors to the stage so nothing clashes on camera. If you stream, check how it reads on the output, not just your monitor.

6. Don't over-animate

Slow, simple transitions look calm and professional. Flashy wipes and spins draw the eye away from the words and age badly on a stream. When in doubt, keep it gentle.

7. Automate the verses so you can breathe

The hardest moment is when the preacher jumps to a passage you didn't plan for and you're suddenly typing a reference while everyone waits.
