The "best" camera is the one that fits your budget, your room's light and how you get the picture into your computer. Here are the realistic options — and the handful of features that actually matter for a church stream.

The most important spec most people overlook: a clean HDMI output — the camera must output full-screen video with no menus or icons on top. Not every consumer camera does.

Camera types that work for church

Smartphone — a great free start; modern phones shoot excellent video. Use a tripod mount.
Webcam — simple USB plug-in; fine for a fixed wide shot in a well-lit room.
Camcorder — designed for long recording and good zoom; look for clean HDMI.
Mirrorless / DSLR — best image quality and low-light, but check it can run for a full service without overheating or shutting off.
PTZ camera — pan/tilt/zoom camera controlled remotely; ideal for a permanent install where one operator runs several angles, often over NDI or IP.

Features that actually matter

Clean HDMI / SDI output — non-negotiable for streaming a real camera.
Good low-light performance — sanctuaries are often dim; a larger sensor helps.
Optical zoom — to frame the stage from the back of the room without losing quality.
Continuous power — mains power, not just a battery, for long services.
Solid mounting — a stable tripod or wall mount so the shot doesn't drift.

Getting the picture into your computer

A phone or webcam connects directly. A camcorder or mirrorless camera needs an HDMI-to-USB capture device so OBS or vMix sees it as a source. PTZ cameras often send video over the network via NDI or IP — no capture card needed.

How many cameras?

Start with one good wide shot. It's better to do one angle well than juggle several badly. Add a second (a closer shot of the preacher) once your workflow is smooth.
